Wearing black pants of some sort with a white or cream top always makes me feel like I’m teetering on the edge of the service industry. I was an awful server, mostly because when I waited tables, it was extremely part-time while I worked a full-time unpaid internship for the Pennsylvania governor. I had to drive 45 minutes each way every day to get to the regional office, so suffice it to say, I needed the gas money.
Our uniform consisted of black pants, black shoes, a white button down and a tie. I wore one of my dad’s ties, maroon with tiny white polka dots. I thought it was a fine selection, but I was the butt of a few jokes. I guess at the time, the tie was too retro. Maybe if I had worn it in Brooklyn I would have fit in a little better.
Hopefully this little ensemble is less “Let me go over our specials.” And a little more “Let me let you take in all. Of. This.”
